Public Health Service conducted an experiment on 399 black men in the late stages of syphilis. These men, for the most part illiterate sharecroppers from one of the poorest counties in Alabama, were never told what disease they were suffering from or its seriousness. Informed that they were being treated for "bad blood," their doctors had no intention of curing them of syphilis at all. The Knoxville Area Urban League Young Professionals (KAULYP) is hosting its third annual Chocolate Dreams Fundraiser on Saturday, March 27, 9 p.m. at Sobu Lounge, 6213 Kingston Pike. The event offers a variety of dessert items, including chocolate provided by Godiva, as well as live entertainment by Jaspects, an Atlanta based jazz band. Proceeds benefit the Knoxville Area Urban League Minority Scholarship Program, in honor of Dr. Walter Hardy. The scholarships are given annually to assist minority students pursuing degrees in health professions. The YWCA Knoxville will hold the 1st Annual Real Talk Summit, a summit about real life for young women in grades 8-12, sponsored by Best Buy. The Real Talk Summit will focus on four key components: enhancing leadership skills, developing healthy relationships, increasing life skills, and exploring educational opportunities for the future.
